Aunty Merle: Things Get Real, is Marc Lottering's new hit musical comedy, now on until 21 January in the Baxter Pam Golding Theatre.
Produced by Lottering's husband Anwar McKay and directed by Lara Foot, CEO of the Baxter, the musical is refreshing and an excellent theatrical tonic of humour as we enter the new year.
Lottering is at his best and the production is adorned with talented Cape actors, including Madeegha Anders, former wife of the late musical icon, the legendary Taliep Petersen.
The show portrays the colourful life of Aunty Merle and hubby Dennis in Belgravia Athlone with a positive spin.
The themes including load shedding are relevant, and even the seal found wondering on Jake's Gerwel Drive is scripted in.
The countdown to the New Year by Lottering, energetic comedian Alfred Adriaan and the two-man cast of Platform 9, highlighted the festivities, and the sold-out performances depict a new hope and optimism for the theatre industry after a two-year lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Thank you Marc Lottering, aka Aunty Merle, for your latest offering and hilarious injection of Cape humour, and I believe it's a must-see for theatre-goers.
