CAPE TOWN - While the ANC won the lion’s share of Eastern Cape municipalities by late afternoon on Tuesday, the DA announced that it retained the majority in the Kouga Municipality, winning 16 of the 29 council seats.
The party won the Eastern Cape municipality from the ANC in 2016.
“Our message to the residents of Kouga is that we will keep striving to live up to their expectations. We will keep doing our best to serve them with dedication, integrity and humility. We will keep getting things done for them,” DA leader John Steenhuisen said.
According to the IEC’s dashboard, the DA received 54.99% of the votes in Kouga, the ANC 36.23%, the Freedom Front Plus 3.25%, the EFF 1.77% and the Patriotic Alliance, 1.55%
“The DA is excited and grateful to have this incredible opportunity to build on the foundation of good governance that we have laid over the past five years. We recognise that there is still so much to be done in Kouga. Our commitment now is to build on this progress so that we can take Kouga from good to great,” Steenhuisen added.
Some municipalities with an ANC majority in the province so far include Mbhashe, Kamma, Sundays River Valley, Makana, Ndlambe and Buffalo City.
Results for the much-anticipated Nelson Mandela Bay municipality are yet to be announced.
This as the counting of votes continues.
