Cape Town - Beach-goers have been advised by the City of Cape Town that a section of Muizenberg Beach will be temporarily closed to the public until further notice.

In a statement, the City said the temporary closure was due to an electrical failure at the Clifton Road sewer pump station that was caused by a faulty ultrasonic device.

The issue at the pump station has since been resolved, and the pump station is operating normally.

Last year the Zandvlei water body also had to be shut down after the aquatic sections of the Zandvlei Nature Reserve developed sewage leaks that left several surfers sick.

The City said as a precaution, City Health has advised that the beach be closed between Muizenberg Pavilion and Sunrise Beach until further notice.

Various City departments have been activated to respond to this incident, including repairing the fault at the pump station.

“City Health will be taking water samples on a daily basis for water quality testing until such time as the levels are within the minimum requirement for recreational activities as determined by the National Water Quality Guidelines.

“In the meantime, the public is advised to avoid contact with the water until further notice. This is a precaution as contact with the water could result in potential gastrointestinal issues and therefore any person who enters the water does so at their own risk,” the statement read.

Health warning signage has been erected, advising the public of the situation.
