DURBAN - A Durban woman, 44, is recovering after being assaulted by her 41 year-old boyfriend, who was later beaten to death by angry community members.
The woman who asked not to be named, said two Sundays ago, she had gone to his house to visit their child but when she returned to home she found her boyfriend was drunk and aggressive.
“I had slept there, his mother’s home, and gone to church on Sunday morning. When I got home, he got angry,” she said.
The woman said he accused her of cheating and hit her, and then left. She then took a nap, thinking it was over because he had been violent before.
“He returned and kicked me out of the house. I left but remained nearby,” she said.
Around midnight on Monday morning, he started leaving her possessions outside the house, and set them alight.
“The community came to my defence and beat him until he died. Prior to that, he had already started fighting with everyone in his path,” she explained.
“Around noon on Monday, he died at my neighbour’s front door,” she said.
It took a while for the police to arrive and by the time the ambulance arrived he had died.
“I knew that he was already dead,” she said.
“His body stayed there for hours without being collected by the forensic services. The vehicle only arrived around 4pm or 5pm.”
The woman said she had sustained injuries to her left arm which was bruised because he had punched her. He also slapped her multiple times.
She said her whole body hurt.
“He also tried to stab me with a screwdriver,” she recalled.
She added that when she ran away, he had gone to look for her at her sister’s house, where he kicked in the door, thinking she was hiding there. She said they had been together for about 17 years.
Police confirmed that Cato Manor SAPS were investigating a case of murder after a community beat a man to death on Nubian Avenue in Chesterville.
