Durban — Ixopo police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after the driver of a bakkie allegedly lost control and the vehicle overturned, killing seven people.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said it was alleged that on Sunday at 9.30pm, a crash occurred on R612 near Wosley Farm where the bakkie driver lost control of the vehicle and overturned.
“Seven passengers aged between 20 and 35 died at the scene and six passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for medical attention,” Gwala said.
“Circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka will join mourners in paying respects to the seven road victims who died in the bakkie crash.
The department said the seven died when a bakkie overturned on R612 between Ixopo and Highflats. The occupants were believed to have been coming from a traditional function in Fairview in Ixopo.
“Four of the victims were employees of a local Boxer store. Other survivors are still fighting for their lives in hospitals,” the department said.
Hlomuka will visit the accident scene before proceeding to the memorial service.
