Durban — The family of Overport businessman Zeyn Moideen are looking to the courts for justice while the men accused of his murder are behind bars awaiting trial.

Moideen was gunned down on April 30 after leaving the Tills Crescent Sports ground on Felix Dlamini Road, formerly called Brickfield Road.

Moideen was shot multiple times in the presence of his children while placing items in the boot of his car. Moideen was the manager of a local soccer team. It was reported that three gunmen travelling in a VW Polo approached Moideen and shot him.

Moideen’s neighbour, Shaheed Moodel, a father of three, was shot and killed in Greyville on April 14 in what the Moideen family believe was a case of mistaken identity.

One of the accused, Reesin Perumal, 37, will be making a bail application in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Perumal and three others have been arrested in connection with the murder.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s KZN spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the other accused, Sbonelo Madanono Shangase, 31, Talent Mkhize, 26, and Mcabangeleni Mkhize, 26, will appear in court on October 13. A source confirmed that Perumal allegedly made a confession to police regarding his alleged role in the murder of Moideen.

The Moideen family is pleading that justice be served and for Perumal to be denied bail and be remanded back to the Department of Correctional Services Westville.

Moideen was a father of four children and had a construction business.

His brother, Rehaad, said they plan to hold a peaceful placard protest outside the court to call for justice. Rehaad believes that if Perumal made a confession to the court and police he should remain behind bars.

“We as the family are urging the court to take into consideration the seriousness of (the) offence and that the accused must be denied bail.

“The tears of my brother's children fall every day,” Rehaad said.

Reliable police sources believe that if Perumal was given bail he would be assassinated within a week because people would fear he would allegedly implicate them. Police pointed out that three weeks ago, a drive-by shooting took place in West Road, Overport. A case of attempted murder was opened at Mayville police station.

Police believe one of Perumal’s alleged associates was almost gunned down outside a shop. A white Polo with tinted windows drove into a parking lot next to the shop entrance. The occupants opened fire at four men outside the shop. The men took cover and nobody was injured.
