Durban – A firearm was pulled and dropped during a scuffle between two people in Howick, north-west of Pietermaritzburg.
Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said their Howick crews were flagged down by a group of locals in Howick town on Sunday morning after a brawl had taken place between two people.
“During the fight, a firearm was pulled and dropped,” Robertson said.
“Midlands crews rendered the required medical assistance and Howick SAPS then took control of the matter.”
“One firearm was handed over to SAPS on the scene,” Robertson said.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “We have checked with Howick SAPS, and no such incident was reported.”
In July, Midlands EMS paramedics found a firearm while responding to an emergency in the Howick area on Tuesday.
Roland Robertson said paramedics found a firearm next to a drain while attending to a patient.
Robertson said a Midlands EMS Howick advanced life support ambulance was dispatched to Fraser Street for a patient who had collapsed alongside the road.
“Upon arrival, it was found that one patient was in a critical condition and required urgent advanced life support treatment.
“While attending to the patient, paramedics noticed a firearm alongside a water drain. At this point, local SAPS was notified and the firearm was handed over to them,” he said.
Robertson said the cause of the incident was being investigated.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said: “We can confirm that a home-made unlicensed firearm with three rounds of ammunition was found abandoned alongside a water drain in the Howick area. The matter is under investigation.”
