Durban — Five people were killed when a light motor vehicle and a sedan crashed on the N2 near Tugela in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday morning.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick said that while on scene at another crash, the medical service received calls for another collision on the N2 near Tugela.

He said that upon arrival, paramedics found a “horrific scene” of a head-on collision between a sedan and a light motor vehicle.

“Eight people were travelling in the sedan, and sadly, five of the passengers were killed during the collision. The three remaining occupants and the two occupants of the second vehicle sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and were transported to nearby facilities for further care,” Meyrick said.

In the first crash, Meyrick said IPSS Medical Rescue was on the scene of a serious vehicle accident on the N2 near Zinkwazi, where four patients were being transported by IPSS Medical Rescue.

Due to road conditions being wet because of rainfall, Meyrick had urged motorists to travel with care in the wet weather.

He also thanked those who assisted in both the crash scenes. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Newark SAPS.

“It is alleged that on October 22, 2022, at 7.30am, two vehicles were involved in a collision on the N2 freeway at Zinkwazi. Five people died during the accident. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.”

Recently, a child was one of six people who were killed in a crash on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. The crash was on the R61 near the Umtamvuna Bridge. A truck, two bakkies and a car had been involved in a collision.

A bakkie and car had been involved in a severe head-on collision, resulting in the occupants becoming entrapped, Botha said.

“Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found three patients had sustained critical injuries, of which one was a child approximately 10 years old. Two further patients had sustained serious injuries, of which one was a 4-year-old child.

“Sadly, though, six occupants sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived, one of which was a young child,” said KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha.
