Durban - A man, charged for the rape of a Wentworth woman, was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, while a second accused is on the run.

It is alleged that the man chatted up the woman on Facebook and they decided to meet near Ansteys Beach. The woman had brought along her friend who she claimed was visiting from Johannesburg. The man also brought along his friend on a double date and it is alleged the couples had dinner, and went to a nightclub on the Bluff.

It is alleged that the couples got into an argument and the men forced themselves on the woman on the beach promenade. The women claimed they walked home topless and claimed they were raped. These allegations will be tested in court.

Almost a month on the run Brighton Beach police Detective Warrant Officer Rudolph Grobler managed to trace and arrest the man in the Berea area on Friday. The second accused fled KwaZulu-Natal.

Police are expected to obtain a warrant of arrest for him from the court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said it is alleged that on June 9, 2022, two women were raped by the suspects.

“They were also robbed of cash, cellphones and jewellery. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested and charged.”

Charges of rape and robbery are investigated by Brighton Beach SAPS.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix SAPS is investigating allegations that a seven year old girl was raped. Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram. said a pedestrian heard a child screaming for assistance from a bush in Royal Manor Road.

“The pedestrian entered the bush and noticed a man fleeing. He attempted to pursue the individual but lost sight of him in the dense vegetation,” he said.
