Durban — Paramedics found a firearm while responding to an emergency in the Howick area on Tuesday.

Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said paramedics found a firearm next to a drain while attending to a patient.

Robertson said a Midlands EMS Howick advanced life support ambulance was dispatched to Fraser Street for a patient who had collapsed alongside the road.

“Upon arrival it was found that one patient was in a critical condition and required urgent advanced life support treatment.

“Whilst attending to the patient, paramedics noticed a firearm alongside a water drain. At this point, local SAPS was notified and the firearm was handed over to them,” he said.

Robertson said the cause of the incident was being investigated.

Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said: “We can confirm that a homemade unlicensed firearm with three ammunition was found abandoned alongside a water drain in the Howick area. The matter is under investigation.”
