Durban — The SANDF deployed under Operation Chariot have indicated that they have completed road rehabilitation projects in eSkebheni, Inanda, north of Durban.
The SANDF has been in KwaZulu-Natal for nearly five months, since the deadly floods of April 2022.
Major Mpho Mathebula said: “Over the period of August 16, 2022, members of Operation Chariot began rehabilitating roads, driveways and bridges in the Inanda area, so as to improve the mobility of cars and taxis for residents in the area, following the April floods.”
Mathebula said that all rehabilitation projects in the area were completed last Friday.
Last month, the SANDF reported that it started repairing a road in eSkebheni, Inanda, north of Durban, following April's heavy rains and flooding.
At the time, Mathebula said several roads were either washed away or damaged, isolating and restricting community members.
Those with cars in the area have not been able to use them to get to work or home, depending on their location when the roads were washed away.
Local resident, Nonhlanhla Dlamini said she was on her way back from work when the road was washed away.
“I have not been able to park my car in my garage for four months,” Dlamini said.
“Since that day I have been parking my car at another house and walking home because there is no longer a road. Others are now using taxis because their cars are stuck on this side of the damaged road,” Dlamini added.
Mathebula said that the team of four soldiers, led by Major Thamsanqa Makhiqi will be working hard to assist the community to regain mobility at as many areas as possible in the area.
