Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police arrested two wanted robbery suspects in Verulam for a business robbery they committed in Esikhaleni, northern KwaZulu-Natal at the start of October.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that police continued to pursue the two remaining suspects who were on the run after they committed a business robbery at Esikhaleni on October 7 at 10pm.
“On October 16, police made a breakthrough when they arrested two men aged 28 and 40 in Verulam,” Gwala said.
“One of the suspects was found in unlawful possession of a firearm and 97 rounds of ammunition.
“Additional charges of defeating the ends of justice will be added after the suspect opened a false case at Verulam where he alleged that he was robbed of his vehicle when in actual fact his vehicle was seized by police during the commission of a crime.”
Gwala said that the 40-year-old suspect appeared before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and the other suspect appeared at the Esikhaleni Magistrate’s Court.
“All four suspects will appear before the Esikhaleni Magistrate’s Court on October 20, 2022,” Gwala added.
Last week, police indicated that they were searching for two alleged business robbers who fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash and customers’ vehicle keys, while two of their accomplices were expected to appear in the Esikhaleni Magistrate’s Court on October 10.
Gwala said that employees and customers at business premises at Moholoholo in Esikhaleni were held at gunpoint by three armed men.
She said that the suspects demanded cash from the cashiers, cellular phones and vehicle keys from the customers at gunpoint.
Gwala said police were immediately alerted and activated all their resources. They reacted immediately to the business robbery, and the team secured all exit points and entered the shop.
“Two suspects, aged 31 and 34, were arrested on the scene, and one was found in unlawful possession of a firearm and six rounds of ammunition. A getaway vehicle, three cellular phones and two wallets belonging to the suspects were seized by police. Other items recovered include five cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash,” Gwala said.
“Two suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and vehicle keys belonging to customers. They are still being sought by police.”
