Durban — Police are tracing suspects who left an AK47 rifle, three pistols and 54 rounds of ammunition in a vehicle that was stolen during a house robbery earlier this year.
Police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said that at 9.30am on Wednesday, police officers from the Provincial Vehicle and Trio Task Team were searching for a vehicle that was stolen in Sydenham during a house robbery in March 2022.
She said during the operation, police officers spotted the vehicle travelling at a high speed. Police chased the vehicle, which was eventually abandoned by those in it.
“When the abandoned vehicle was searched, police found an AK47 rifle, three pistols and 54 rounds of ammunition inside,” Ngcobo said.
“An investigation is under way to trace the perpetrators.”
Earlier in the week, police officers from the Special Investigations and Tracking Task Team arrested four men allegedly with firearms.
Ngcobo said that on Monday at 10.15pm, police officers received intelligence regarding a suspect that was wanted for a house robbery that occurred at Verulam.
She said the officers went to a house at Cornubia where they found the 20-year-old wanted suspect. A pistol and ammunition were allegedly found in his possession and he was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Ngcobo said the police officers then proceeded to Bhambayi where they arrested three men aged between 20 and 25 for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
“The suspects appeared before the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on September 20, 2022, and they were remanded in custody for a formal bail application.”
