Durban — Chatsworth police are investigating a case of business robbery after suspects robbed the Sizakala Centre in Shallcross.
According to information from Chatsworth Crime Watch, there was a break-in at Sizakala Centre in Shallcross. All its computers and electronic equipment were stolen.
“This was the second such incident in the last few months,” Chatsworth Crime Watch said.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said: “It is alleged that on November 3, 2022, at 4.20am three unknown armed men entered the premises and stole computers.”
“The suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicle.”
The robbery comes just days after eThekwini Municipality mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said during a media briefing that 17 eThekwini Municipality Sizakala and Human Capital Centres of Excellence have been broken into with assets worth more than R6 million – including computers, hardware, and network cables – stolen.
Kaunda said the municipality wanted to register its concern that the city’s efforts to bring information and communication technology closer to communities were being hampered by the increase in incidents of theft at Sizakala and Human Capital Centres of Excellence.
“In recent months, 17 centres have been broken into, with assets totalling over R6 million – which include computers, hardware, and network cables – being stolen,” Kaunda said.
“We strongly condemn these incidents, as they frustrate our efforts to provide access to information to residents living in rural and township communities who used to be able to apply for jobs and business opportunities online.”
He said that, while a comprehensive security plan was being implemented to safeguard these assets, the municipality appealed to members of the community who might have witnessed these incidents to share information with the police so that all those responsible for these criminal acts were brought to book.
