Durban — A private security firm and the police apprehended at least three suspects who allegedly robbed homes and schoolchildren in parts of Phoenix, north of Durban.

Private security company KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said that robbery suspects were apprehended in the Whetstone area by the company and Phoenix Trio Crimes members.

Naidoo said that KZN VIP responded after receiving reports of a pupil being robbed in the vicinity of Whetstone Drive. He said that moments later, another call was received for suspicious males along Grassfern Gardens.

“While additional back-up was en route the suspects were spotted running into Lowfern, where they were cornered and apprehended swiftly by KZN VIP and Trio Crimes members,” Naidoo said.

“The suspects were found in possession of a replica firearm and also knives that are believed to have been used in the commission of crimes in the area.

“One of the suspects confessed to committing crimes during the early hours of the morning and also after school when children are going home.”

Naidoo said the suspects were taken away by the police and are pending further investigation, as they could potentially be linked to many cases in the Fernham and Whetstone areas.

Commenting on a Facebook post, Neville Naidoo asked KZN VIP to conduct an operation in the pathway on the side of the Westham garage. He said that three guys with firearms were robbing people at random in the mornings and evenings.

The police were approached for comment and had not responded by the time of publication.
