Durban — Two of the six alleged hijackers that were arrested in Isipingo on Sunday afternoon are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the possession of suspected stolen property.
It is alleged the two hijacked a motorist in Pietermaritzburg and dropped the driver off in Umbumbulu, south of Durban.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said that on September 25, 2022, at 12.15pm, police received information about a vehicle which was hijacked in Pietermaritzburg.
Gwala said police proceeded to Lotus Park where they spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the hijacked vehicle.
“Two suspects saw the police, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The police gave chase and arrested the suspects aged between 18 and 22 for possession of suspected stolen property,” Gwala said.
She said that on questioning them, they found out that four other suspects were driving a silver vehicle in Isipingo and waiting for their friends.
“The police searched for the vehicle, found the suspects and arrested them for carjacking. A case of carjacking was opened at Plessislaer police station for investigation,” Gwala said.
“Two suspects are set to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (Monday) for possession of suspected stolen property.”
Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Geraldine Stevens said a white Volkswagen Polo was hijacked in Pietermaritzburg and the driver was dropped off in the Umbumbulu area, south of Durban.
“The vehicle was chased and the suspects were apprehended in Isipingo, Lotus Park - with two male suspects, who informed the police they had another vehicle they were working with, a Hyundai, with four suspects, all from PMB,” Stevens said.
Stevens said that all the suspects were detained at Isipingo SAPS.
On Sunday afternoon, PT Alarms, a private security company, said their tactical officers, metro police and Tracker Connect members had tracked, chased and arrested six hijacking suspects while recovering a vehicle, a firearm and several cellphones on Sunday morning.
Adding to Stevens’ statement, PT Alarms said Tracker Control had activated a tracking device and immediately the PT tactical unit and metro police proceeded in search of the vehicle. It was tracked on Lotus Drive in Isipingo. Two suspects spotted the members approaching and abandoned the vehicle before fleeing.
“A chase ensued and within minutes, the suspects were apprehended.
“When the alleged accomplices, who were travelling in another vehicle, realised that members of their gang were apprehended, they attempted to flee in the Isipingo area. They were pursued and apprehended by metro police and PT tactical unit members on Phila Ndwandwe Road,” PT Alarms said.
The company said all six suspects, the two vehicles, a firearm and several cellphones that were allegedly found in their possession were taken to Isipingo SAPS for processing and further investigation.
