Durban — Two young men were allegedly injured following a drive-by shooting after leaving a tavern in Cottonlands, Phoenix, on Friday night.

According to Reaction Unit SA spokesperson Prem Balram, two 19-year-olds were injured in a drive-by shooting shortly after leaving a tavern in Cottonlands on Friday night.

Balram said that at approximately 9.55pm a white Toyota Quantum had arrived at the association’s headquarters with the injured teens.

"One of the boys was found to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his right arm, back and abdomen, while the second teenager had suffered an injury to his head," Balram said.

The victims had reported that they had left a tavern and were travelling in their bakkie in the direction of Ndwedwe, far north-west of Durban, when they realised they were being followed.

The driver of the bakkie sped up when occupants in the vehicle following them opened fire. They veered off the road and crashed their vehicle. They then fled on foot into roadside bushes, where they hid from their attackers.

After a brief period, they came out of the bushes and sought assistance from a resident, who transported them to the association for assistance.

"The injured males were stabilised before being transported to hospital by ambulance," Balram said.

Police had not commented by the time of publication.
