Durban — A young man has been convicted and sentenced for drug dealing in Pietermaritzburg.

Last Tuesday, the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced Lindokuhle Made, 27, for dealing in drugs.

Hawks KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said that on November 3 last year, Hawks officers from the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit conducted an intelligence-driven operation in Pietermaritzburg.

Lindokuhle Made was found in possession of 10 white moon-shaped substances suspected to bedrock cocaine with a street value of approximately R20 000. He was arrested and charged with dealing drugs.

“He appeared in court several times, until on Wednesday, August 7, when he entered into a plea agreement in terms of Section 105a of the Criminal Procedure Act with the State,” said Ncane.

“On Tuesday, August 13, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to two years’ direct imprisonment, with half of the sentence suspended for five years.

“The accused was given an option to pay a R12 000 fine. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.”

Meanwhile, the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court sentenced Samkelo Ndlovu, 22, for drug dealing last month.

On September 14, 2023, Hawks members from the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime unit received information about a man dealing drugs on Jeqe Road, Ashdown, in Pietermaritzburg.

A disruptive operation was swiftly set in motion and the members proceeded to the said place.

During the search, Ndlovu was found with 63 pieces of crack cocaine with a street value of R3 150. He was arrested and charged with dealing drugs.

He appeared in Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court where he was released on R1 000 bail. However, Ndlovu did not attend the court again. In January 2024, the court issued a warrant of arrest for him. In April 2024 the accused was rearrested.

On July 17, Ndlovu entered a guilty plea in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act. He was found guilty and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment of which one year was suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of dealing in drugs or similar offences during the period of suspension.

The accused was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
