Durban — Three men charged with the gang rape of a 15-year-old Mariannhill school pupil will remain behind bars after the court turned down their bail application.

The accused aged 19, 21 and 24 appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and the State asked for the matter to be adjourned for a decision on the transfer of the case from the regional prosecutor.

It is alleged that earlier this year while the teen was on her way home from school, she was lured by one of the men into a room.

“The complainant was raped by more than one person,” alleges the State.

During their bail bid, the court heard that the men intended pleading not guilty.

The State alleged the pupil had been walking home from school when the first suspect, 19, called her and she ignored him.

The investigating officer in the case, Constable L Zuma, told the court it was alleged by the complainant that the suspect she had ignored followed her and took her bag.

“She followed him to where he was going. He entered a room,” said the officer. The complainant further alleged that when she was inside he pushed her onto a bed and called out to two friends. All three raped her.
