Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker celebrated a milestone this weekend, as he notched up his 100th win at the helm of the Western Cape side with a significant triumph over the illustrious Orlando Pirates.

The match, held at the historic Orlando Stadium, showcased the sheer determination and skill of Barker’s players, culminating in a victory that has propelled Stellies to third place in the Betway Premiership standings.

Since taking charge in 2017 when the team was still competing in the second division, Barker has been instrumental in transforming Stellenbosch into a respected contender on South Africa's elite football stage. Under his guidance, the club has not only experienced gradual promotion but also achieved trophy success, as well as participation in continental competition.

The milestone 100th win came courtesy of a well-executed counter-attack, culminating in a precise finish from newly capped Bafana Bafana forward Devin Titus in the first half.

His goal proved decisive, ensuring that Stellies collected all three points against a Pirates side that had enjoyed a seven-game winning streak, including CAF Champions League success. Reflecting on the victory, Barker expressed immense pride in his players.

“These players never cease to amaze me,” he remarked.

“Their courage, their bravery, their commitment, and their desire are commendable. We came off an extremely difficult week, returning to Cape Town on Friday before arriving here last night to face a team brimming with confidence.”

He highlighted the tactical prowess of his assistant, Wesley Sergel, stating, “The way we set up the team was superb.”

With this significant victory, Barker's achievements at Stellenbosch are cemented further, especially considering the team secured back-to-back wins at Orlando Stadium over the past season and a half.

As they move forward, Stellenbosch are just six points behind both Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Pirates, demonstrating their competitive edge in the league. Barker's landmark win embodies not only personal achievement but also a testament to the collective spirit and resilience of a squad determined to rise through the ranks of South African football.

Stellies also avenged their MTN8 Final loss to Pirates as they put on a tactical masterclass to not only keep their much favoured opponents but also remain dangerous.

“We were a lot better structurally and the game settled for the half, we’re a team good in transition and once again showed, with the ball from Ashley (Cupido), a good pace in. behind Devin (Titus) and it was a good finish, we got the goal we wanted,” said Barker when breaking down the game.

“Then it was about keeping structure to try and maintain the lead, going into the half 1-0 up, then in the second half we came out with improved structure … Pirates had a lot of possession, a lot of half moments.

Stellies will now turn their attention to CAF Confederation Cup football as they prepare to take on RS Berkane in the second group stage match this weekend.
