From success to stardom: Maglera Doe Boy’s bold moves with major brands

Rapper Maglera Doe Boy has been on a career high, riding the wave of his 2023 success. Real name Tokelo Moyakhe, the rapper has developed a strong brand thanks to his work as a hip hop artist.

He has been able to work with international and local brands such as Puma, Hennessy and NikNaks.

In a candid conversation with IOL, Maglera Doe Boy delved into his ongoing projects, collaborations, and personal journey, providing a window into the mind of an artist poised on the brink of global recognition.

The year 2023 was quite the year for Maglera Doe Boy, he topped the charts, landed successful music collaborations and certified himself as one of the top rappers in the country.

He began 2024 in New York with rapper A$AP Rocky and he has been growing his partnership with local brand NikNaks.

The brand and the popular artist have produced a dynamic short film, which aired on Meta, YouTube, and at taxi ranks nationwide, which celebrates kasi magic, corner culture and the brand’s new flavour Cheesy Kota.

“Being a kid who grew up eating NikNaks, it's such a full circle moment,” said the rapper.

“It’s a very positive brand for black kids so when my manager told me; we have a chance to work with these guys, I was like what can I do that's cool for these kids.

“Corner culture has been like such a dark thing for South Africa that I feel like it's shining a light on like the positives of the corner store.”

Fans are eagerly anticipating new music from the rapper and they will be thrilled to learn about "The Maglera Tapes," is on the way.

The upcoming project is aimed at showcasing the essence of Maglera's hometown, Klerksdorp, which in street culture is known as Maglera.

“This project is a testament to the place, not just the person," he explains, hinting at contributions from both local talents and international artists.

Maglera Doe Boy's journey has also seen a significant milestone with the signing of a major international deal, poised to take his music to new heights, hinting that it is a very big deal, hinting that it is a United States record label.

Throughout his career, Maglera Doe Boy has maintained a strong commitment to authenticity and positive influence.

He avoids derogatory language and stereotypes in his music, a choice influenced by personal experiences and a desire to honour the women in his life.

"Calling women derogatory names affects how you treat the women around you," he reflects, highlighting a conscious effort to maintain a respectful and empowering narrative.

Fashion is another avenue through which Maglera Doe Boy expresses his artistic vision, he has had recent collaborations with Cotton On and Mr. Price, he hints at upcoming projects with high-end brands.

His fashion choices, deeply rooted in township culture, serve as a testament to his commitment to authenticity and representation. One won't find him stepping out, looking nothing but his best as looking good is part of his identity.

"My journey has been a journey, filled with intentionality and a desire to make a positive impact."

Maglera Doe Boy started making music in high school, working with the Jaziel Brothers and since then he has had his foot on the pedal, making calculated decisions that represent his love for Motswako and hip hop.
