Rising Nigerian rapper PDSTRN (pronounced pedestrian) has just released his first single of the year.
“Idan”, which translates to “boss” in English, is a tantalising preview of his upcoming EP, “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, which is set to be released in a few months.
It’s a pulsating fusion of rap and Afrobeats, which examines themes of lust, ego and bravado.
Taking inspiration from the streets of Lagos, the rapper shared: “I’m a product of my environment – the streets. Most of my inspiration comes from that. The stories, the people, the lifestyle, and the nuances are all encapsulated in my art because I am the streets and the streets are me.”
The song was written and produced in just three weeks amid many challenges such as power outages, equipment failures and noise complaints from disgruntled neighbours.
“Every second and minute we spent working on this song and the project as a whole played a huge part in the composition. I don't think I would have added or taken anything away from the experience,” he said.
So far the track has been well-received and fans are looking forward to PDSTRN’s full body of work.
“Fans are enjoying the record. It’s been amazing. I can’t lie and most times I get these reactions in real life which, to me, is way more heart-warming than any other kind. I love and appreciate everyone hitting play on the record and seeing it resonate with them is truly remarkable,” said the rap star.
The song is the first offering from PDSTRN’s upcoming EP, “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, in which he collaborates with Nigerian DJ and producer, Sholz.
“Rock, Paper, Scissors” promises to push the boundaries of Nigerian hip hop and Afrobeats by showcasing PDSTRN's storytelling prowess, penchant for dark tones, and ability to flow effortlessly over expansive beats.
About working with the renowned DJ and producer, PDSTRN said: “Sholz is such an amazing producer and his ears got to be protected at all costs (LOL).
“Working with Sholz opened my mind to a lot of different soundscapes that I would say kind of shaped the trajectory and direction of this project.
“Being locked in the studio with him is always fun because we both were always going to come out of the session with something that’s all shades of fire.”
