Tennis is having a major moment - thanks to the international film "Challengers" putting the sport back in the spotlight.

But if you thought only Hollywood could deliver a gripping tennis drama, think again. Showmax has just released the first trailer for "Breekpunt", a fresh local take on the high-stakes world of competitive tennis, and it’s set to premiere this March.

Starring the talented actress Chelsea Thomas, who Mzansi viewers will recognise from "Spinners," "Alles Malan," and "Arendsvlei", "Breekpunt" follows a gutsy teenager determined to make it on the international tennis stage.

But the biggest challenges she faces aren’t just about winning matches; it’s a fight for independence, proving that her dream is valid, and standing firm against those who think tennis isn’t a "real career".

The story taps into the all-too-relatable struggle of young people being pressured into "sensible" career paths while their true passions are dismissed.

If you loved Thomas and Cantona James on-screen chemistry in "Spinners" and "Arendsvlei" you’ll probably appreciate this drama series. The two reunite in "Breekpunt", with James stepping into the role of a former tennis champion.

'Arendsvlei’s' Sherman Faro shares the parent role with Lorcia Cooper.

Also joining the cast is N’kone Mametja as Thomas’s best friend and Nahum Hughes as her brother - because what’s a sports drama without some solid friendships and a bit of family tension? And, of course, no coming-of-age story is complete without parental pressure.

Her parents are played by Saftas winner Lorcia Cooper Kumalo ("Lockdown", "Red Ink") and Sherman Faro, best known as Thys Cupido from "Arendsvlei".

"Breekpunt" highlights the clash between ambition and expectation, the sacrifices that come with chasing a dream, and the realities that hit hard.

While it is set in the world of competitive tennis, its core themes stretch far beyond the court. The series delves into the tension between ambition and expectation - something many young athletes and artists face.

Thomas highlights her battle against societal norms that question whether a career in sports is a "real job". In South Africa, where traditional professions are often prioritised, "Breekpunt" delves into the internal and external struggles faced by those who dare to pursue a different path.

With "Justice Served" and "Lioness" producers Ochre Moving Pictures behind it and Saftas-nominated Nicola Hanekom directing, viewers can expect storytelling that goes beyond the court.

  • "Breekpunt" premieres on Showmax on March 10, with new episodes dropping every Monday.
