Lethabo Mekoa, known for her role as Ntswaki on ‘Skeem Saam’, has been honoured with the Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Female Actor at the 7th Royalty Soapy Awards.
The ceremony, on August 24 at Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria, recognises outstanding achievements in South African television.
Mekoa, who was also crowned Miss Teen Regional Gauteng Province (RGP) 2023, was visibly delighted and somewhat surprised upon receiving the award. The moment was made even more memorable as the “Skeem Saam” crew joined her on stage to celebrate her win.
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Mekoa praised “Skeem Saam”, saying, "Shout out to Skeem Saam. If it wasn’t for Skeem Saam, I wouldn’t be here today. So to Mam Winnie and to everyone, the crew, the cast, you guys are so amazing, and to everyone else, my supporters, I love you guys. Let’s keep on going.“
Following the awards, Mekoa celebrated with a festive road convoy. She shared a video on Instagram of herself holding the award, with her face visible through the sunroof of the car.
In another Instagram post, Mekoa shared her excitement and gratitude with a message for her supporters and fans. “Wow, what a journey this has been! I'm beyond grateful to be recognised as Best Newcomer at the Royalty Awards.
“This moment is a testament to the hard work, passion, and resilience that has driven me every single day. To my family, friends, and fans – thank you for believing in me and supporting my dreams. This award is not just mine; it’s ours,” she said.
“Every audition, every late-night rehearsal, every moment of doubt has led me to this incredible achievement. But this is just the beginning. I’m excited to continue sharing my story, my growth, and my art with all of you.
“Here’s to many more milestones, learning experiences, and celebrations. The journey ahead is long, but I’m ready for it with all of you by my side. THANK YOU SOUTH AFRICA.”
In addition to Mekoa’s wins, “Skeem Saam” was well-represented at the awards, with Mahlatsi Moropo receiving the Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Actor and Harriet Manamela honoured with the Outstanding Supporting Actor award for her role as ‘Meikie Maputla’.
The night celebrated not only Mekoa’s individual success but also the collective achievements of the “Skeem Saam” cast.
