Title challengers Orlando Pirates will be looking to secure a vital three points against bottom-placed Magesi FC in a clash scheduled for this Sunday at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, kick-off at 3.30pm.

Following a stellar performance in their last outing, the Buccaneers are eager to overcome the shock of their previous defeat to the Limpopo side, which saw Magesi triumph 3-2 in the Carling Knockout just a few weeks ago.

Magesi FC now finds themselves navigating troubled waters under the interim management of Papi Zothwane, following the resignation of head coach Clinton Larsen with ex-Pirates coach Owen Da Gama said to be edging closer to being the permanent replacement.

This weekend's match marks an opportunity for Magesi to gain momentum as they hope to recover from their woeful form that has seen them slide to 16th in the Betway Premiership standings. Currently, three points adrift of safety, a win against Pirates could catapult them out of the relegation zone, provided other results align in their favour.

The stakes could not be higher for both teams. The Buccaneers are on a high after recently demolishing Marumo Gallants 8-1, extending their unbeaten run to three matches. With their eyes firmly set on the top of the table, Orlando Pirates sit behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, just three points adrift, but with a game in hand.

A victory against Magesi combined with a Sundowns loss this weekend would see the Pirates leapfrog their rivals in the standings. Although Magesi brings a struggling record into the match and a three-game winless streak, they will take to the pitch buoyed by the hope of replicating their earlier cup success against the Soweto giants.

Key player Edmore Chirambadare, who played a pivotal role in Magesi's last win over Pirates, is expected to rally his teammates, while Tshegofatso Mabasa will be a focal point for Pirates, fresh off an impressive hat-trick performance.

Fortunately for Pirates, they will welcome back Patrick Maswanganyi from suspension, a much-needed boost amid ongoing injury woes for teammates Goodman Mosele, Zakhele Lepasa, and Olisa Ndah.

Conversely, despite their recent struggles, Magesi are entering the encounter without any suspension concerns, presenting Zothwane a chance to field his strongest possible line-up.

As the two teams prepare to face off, all eyes will undoubtedly be on the thrilling potential of a match that could shape the narrative of their seasons — an encounter steeped in rivalry, uncertainty, and the ever-present desire to succeed amidst adversity.

With their first ever cup meeting already producing a memorable moment in South African football history, interest is growing to see what a first ever league meeting will provide.
