Owner Jo Vels of Jam Restaurant in Quarters Hotel in Morningside shared her Christmas table tips.

Start by choosing a theme you love and ensure you stick to it. Then select the special items you would like to display on your table, such as trinkets and decorations.

Beautiful crockery, cutlery and table linen are essentials.

Make each place setting unique and special by adding name cards or other personal touches.

Choose one bold centrepiece for your table, such as flowers or a fruit arrangement. Ensure that it doesn’t block your guests’ view of each other and hinder conversation.

Home-made cards and craft gifts will also add a special feel to the table.

Remember that what you do shouldn’t have to depend on how much you spend. Let this be a thoughtful, creative exercise.

Experiment by mixing the old with the new, and mixing and matching table settings. Use your imagination.

Try to include a welcome drink to add to the festive spirit.

For the table setting pictured we have opted for a pink accent which goes well with the striking black Christmas tree adorned with crystals. - The Mercury
