Plastic containers are a common choice for storage in many kitchens due to their durability and affordability. However, not all items are best suited for plastic.

Here are nine things you should avoid storing in plastic containers.

1. Tomato sauces and curries

If you have a plastic container permanently stained by tomato sauce or curry, it’s because these acidic foods aren’t ideal for plastic storage. The acidity in these foods can degrade the plastic and cause it to absorb odours over time. The reddish stain left behind is a result of this reaction, which may also lead to chemical leaching.

2. Garlic, onions, and fresh herbs

When storing garlic, onions, or fresh herbs, opt for alternatives to plastic containers. Strong-smelling foods like garlic and onions can permeate the plastic, leaving behind odours that could affect future storage. Fresh herbs, meanwhile, tend to wilt quickly in plastic due to insufficient ventilation.

3. Fruits

Fruits such as berries, avocados, and citrus should not be kept in plastic containers either. The lack of airflow causes moisture to build up, making the fruits mouldy and mushy.

4. Hot foods

Never store hot foods or liquids in plastic containers, as the heat can cause the plastic to release harmful chemicals. Always allow food to cool before placing it in plastic storage.

5. Oily, fatty, or greasy foods

Oily and greasy foods can break down plastic over time, leading to potential contamination. Foods high in fat, such as lasagne, can absorb more chemicals from plastic, making glass a better storage option.

6. Books

Plastic containers aren’t just unsuitable for food; they’re also bad for items like books. Trapped moisture can warp pages or cause mildew, which can damage books.

7. Leather goods

Leather items such as purses, boots, and jackets should be stored carefully if using plastic containers. While plastic might be safe in cool, dry conditions, any moisture could lead to mould or mildew, potentially cracking the leather. Using silica gel packets can help preserve leather in plastic containers.

8. Photographs

Photographs are at risk of damage if stored in plastic containers, especially if heat or moisture gets trapped. This can cause photos to stick together or fade over time.

9. Candles

Storing candles in plastic containers can be risky if the container is exposed to heat or sunlight, as this can cause the wax to soften or melt, leading to a loss of shape.

The best storage alternatives to plastic

For most of these items, glass is a better storage option. It’s non-reactive, stain-resistant, and suitable for both hot and cold items. Silicone bags are also an eco-friendly, reusable alternative.
