DURBAN - Chatsworth residents staged an evening protest at Summerfield Primary School against gender-based violence (GBV) last week.
ANC MP Brandon Pillay, said that the community was pleased that representatives from the ABH women's shelter were present. He said they highlighted their work, as well as the need for stakeholder support, commitment and collaboration.
“We should not just commemorate 16 days of no violence against women and children but start a campaign for it to be everyday, we need 365 days of activism. We have a responsibility to protect our women and children everyday.”
Pillay added that he is pleased that more men are coming forward to talk about gender based violence.
“I am happy that the narrative is changing, that men are taking a firm stand and leading the conversations around GBV. We must do more to empower and develop women so that they can break free from the cycle of patriarchy.”
Yaseen Adam, chairperson of non-profit organisation Legendary Earth said citizens need to come together to help eradicate the scourge of GBV.
“Let us unite and stand to protect the women in society from all forms of violence and oppression.”
Adam added that there needed to be more awareness campaigns.
“This was a great initiative by the Take Back the Night team, to get the community out here to spread awareness and break the silence against GBV”.
