Durban - An 11-month-old baby fell into a pond at his family home in Cato Ridge, outside Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.

According to Mi7 national group director, Colin David, just after midday on Tuesday afternoon an Emergency Medical Services team was dispatched following a request for assistance from a doctor's practice in the Cato Ridge area.

When Mi7 medics arrived at the practice they found that an 11-month-old baby had fallen into a pond at home.

David said the father had found the child shortly after the incident and initiated CPR.

“The father managed to resuscitate his son and rushed him to the doctor for further treatment,” he said.

David said the baby was in a critical condition.

“Mi7 medics quickly worked to get the baby to Hibiscus Cato Ridge Hospital where Mi7 Advanced Life Support paramedics, along with the doctor and nursing staff, worked to stabilise the baby,” he said.

He said once stabilised, Mi7 medics then transferred the baby to a tertiary hospital in Durban for further specialist care.

Last year IOL reported that a 14-month-old drowned in a pool in Pennington on the KZN South Coast.

According to paramedics, the female child was found submerged in the pool by a relative. Residents alerted Netcare 911 as well as NSRI Shelly Beach who rushed to the scene to assist.

“A full advanced life support resuscitation was initiated, however, despite best efforts, the child’s condition had rapidly deteriorated and was sadly declared deceased on the scene,” said Netcare 911 at the time.
