Durban – A multi-vehicle crash on the N3 near New England Road in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night left one person dead and several injured.
Mi7 National Group director Colin David said that just after 9pm members from the emergency medical services were dispatched after receiving reports of the accident.
David said on arrival Mi7 medics found that a number of vehicles had collided, with wrecked vehicles strewn across the highway.
He said other emergency service providers were also on the scene.
According to David, two patients sustained minor injuries and did not want to be taken to hospital while another two, a mother and daughter, suffered moderate to severe injuries and were stabilised before being taken to hospital.
“Unfortunately, one elderly man, who was entrapped in the wreckage, was declared deceased on scene,” he said.
Mi7 wished the injured a speedy recovery and offered condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.
In a separate incident on Saturday night, a child was one of three fatalities after a collision involving a truck and a vehicle on the N2 in the Umzumbe area on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
Botha said paramedics assessed the scene and found that one patient, a young child, had sustained critical injuries.
“The patient was treated on scene, but sadly succumbed to their injuries, despite the efforts of Advanced Life Support Paramedics,” he said while a second patient trapped inside the truck sustained serious injuries.
Botha said together with Ray Nkonyeni Fire and Rescue services, paramedics worked for over an hour to free the patient using specialised rescue equipment.
“The patient was then transported to hospital for further treatment. Sadly two other occupants sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to their injuries before emergency services arrived.”
