Durban – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 thunderstorms warning for Monday, December 19 over parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

The SAWS said scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over most parts of KZN on Monday.

“Some of these storms are expected to become severe over the western parts and Midlands. These storms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours, excessive lightning, hail and strong damaging winds,” said SAWS.

Saws said there may be localised flooding of settlements, low lying roads and bridges as well as damage to infrastructure.

“Severe lightning can possibly result in localised fire incidents, injuries to humans and livestock,” it said.

The Weather Service warned the conditions may cause difficulty driving and minor vehicle accidents while the hail and flying debris may cause localised damage to property and infrastructure.

In a regional forecast issued for Monday, SAWS said scattered showers and thundershowers are expected but isolated in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-easterly.

  • In Durban conditions are expected to be cloudy with scattered showers and rain with moderate southerly to south-easterly winds.
  • Richards Bay will be cloudy with isolated showers and rain as well as moderate southerly to south-easterly winds.
  • Residents in Pietermaritzburg can expect cloudy conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers.
