Cape Town - Drifters, spinners and race car enthusiasts gathered at the Killarney Raceway on Wednesday to mark the final Safer Roads For All (SR4A) initiative.

The drive, now in its second year, seeks to raise awareness about road safety. It was founded by Deon Daniels, better known as DJ Ready D, to encourage everyone using the roads to be more vigilant and aware, as motorists are “not the only ones using the roads”.

He said during the festive season, motorists needed to pay more attention and avoid drifting and spinning on public roads.

“We took professional drifters and spinners to the racetrack and purposely spun out of order to show them the dangers of spinning on public roads. Sadly, the event was not for the public but we are planning a more inclusive event.”

Ready D’s wife, well known driver Malikah Daniels, said, “The road death rates are too high during this time and people need to practise road safety methods. We wish for people to spread the word to their communities as well.”

'Get involved'

She hoped more women would get involved in drifting, as they too could teach others about road safety.

“Men have been very supportive of me, they do not treat me any differently because of my gender. These drifters have done a great job of promoting road safety.”

Drifting enthusiast and supporter Yazeed de Lange said he was honoured to have been part of such a great initiative.

“I look up to these men and women and what they are doing is very commendable. Seeing them drifting like that and still promoting road safety is amazing.”

De Lange said he would love to start spinning as well.

“Killarney is a great place for us to practice what we love and it is quite safe for everyone. We are not on the public roads and everyone else should also avoid spinning and drifting on public roads.”
