Cape Town - The second annual Drift City tournament was staged to world-class standards
at the weekend,
as Cape Town and its petrolheads came out for drifting action on the iconic landmark that is the Grand Parade.
Thousands of spectators celebrating Heritage Day and the Cape Town car “sub-culture” were treated to adrenalin-pumping action, the Grand Parade was filled with the sound of revving engines and the doorstep of the City Hall was engulfed in rubber smoke..

Drifting competitors participated on a mirrored obstacle course, eliminated through stages to a nail-biting final between Otto Graven and Izak van Zyl, which Graven won. Christopher “The Candyman” Long took third.
In a breakthrough for motorsport events in the Cape, 2016 saw the inaugural event staged to high expectations and success, and this year 17 drifters went bumper to bumper for more motoring entertainment.
I got in on the action, joining Dr1ftSquad member and radio DJ ReadyD in his Nissan 400SX for a dynamic drift experience.
Spectators were given the opportunity to drive shotgun at the drift exhibition area and entertainment was plentiful, catering for a family-oriented day. Event organiser Gary Stockenstroom said they were already working on the 2018 edition.
