A 22-year-old woman and her toddler son were found dead in their home in Umgababa on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Friday morning.

Police said it is alleged the woman and her son were killed by her boyfriend who then allegedly took his own life.

Provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed his 22-year-old girlfriend and their three-year-old son to death before taking his own life.

The incident took place in the Danganya area in Umgababa.

"The bodies were recovered on Friday morning with the incident suspected to have happened late on Thursday night or in the early hours of Friday."

He said when police arrived at the scene, the bodies of the woman and her child were lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds.

"The suspect was found hanging from the roof inside the house. Their identity documents were found placed on top of the bed," Netshiunda said.

He said Umkomaas SA Police Service (SAPS) were investigating two counts of murder and an inquest.

Netshiunda said the motive of the killings is under investigation.

Earlier this week, a woman was killed also on the KZN South Coast.

Police said the man who had confessed to killing the woman on a social media video that went viral was found hanging on a tree on Wednesday morning in the Malangeni area in Umzinto.

"On Tuesday evening, police responded to reports of a murder on a gravel road at Malangeni area in Umzinto where the body of a 25-year-old woman was found lying in the middle of the road. Her bloodied body was found with several stab wounds and a broken knife was found next to her body," police said at the time.

"Reports indicate that the suspect fetched the woman, who was his girlfriend, from her home and it is suspected that the two had a domestic-related altercation which escalated to the murder," he said.

"The suspect’s vehicle was found abandoned down the road from where the woman’s body was found, and blood on the front passenger seat suggested that the suspect killed the woman inside his vehicle."

Police said a manhunt was quickly launched and an intensive search by police led to the discovery of the suspect’s body which was hanging on a tree, in what is believed to be a suicide.

"Police are investigating a case of murder and an inquest docket will also be opened for further investigation.
