The Reaction Unit SA chopper took to the skies on Monday as rescue teams continued to search for a teenager who drowned at a KwaZulu-Natal beach at the weekend.

Rusa's Prem Balram said a crew assisted in the search, flying over the Umzumbe beach searching for 13-year-old Armaan Khan's body.

Balram said the Rusa team flew 129 kilometers to the scene at Umzumbe Beach and conducted a low level search, 10kms south and 14km north of the drowning scene.

"The three hour search along the coast was unsuccessful," he said.

Armaan is believed to have been swept out to sea on Saturday, February 1.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) reported that five people were swept out to sea in front of Mocking Bird Chalets on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

"Good Samaritans attempted to rescue the teenager and his family members. All were caught in rip currents," said the NSRI's Craig Lambinon.

Armaan's uncle, a 36-year-old member of Durban's Metro Police, reportedly tried to help search for the teen but he drowned.

"A search continued for the missing teenager but despite extensive search efforts there remain no signs of the teenager who had disappeared under water after reportedly being swept off a sand bank by waves and then caught in rip currents," Lambinon said.

The search for Armaan's body continues.
