What you need to know about retirement

The 2002 Old Mutual/Personal Finance Retire Right national seminars will be held in March.

If you cannot live on R570 a month then this seminar is for you, no matter how old you are now.

The state pays a monthly pension of R570 to people who do not have pension savings - and sadly this is the pension received by the majority of the aged in South Africa.

There are 10 main reasons why people do not retire with sufficient money - and one of these is the absence of a proper plan.

Another reason is a lack of investment knowledge.

While the seminars will not make you a retirement expert, they will equip you to properly plan for retirement and help you to ensure you remain financially secure in your retirement.

The objective of the seminars is to ensure you "retire right".

Old Mutual and Personal Finance have joined forces to bring you these comprehensive seminars to help you get your retirement plans right, no matter what your age.

The seminars are aimed at you, whether you are still some way from retirement but want to structure your savings so that you will retire with sufficient capital; if you are less than 10 years from retirement; or if you are already in retirement.

These seminars will help you ensure that you will have a good chance of giving meaning to the term "your golden years".

Mike Harper, the executive general manager of Private Wealth at Old Mutual, says: "When it comes to retirement planning, the message is clear: start now. If you want to know how, I strongly recommend you attend Retire Right.

"Whether you are in your early working years, or you are facing retirement; or whether you are already in retirement, you have to get your planning and investment strategy right. This seminar will help you to do just that."

The seminar has been structured around the three phases of retirement - the build-up period, the 10 years before retirement, and retirement.

The seminar will be held in Midrand, Gauteng, on March 6; Durban on March 8; and in Somerset West, Western Cape, on March 11.

To avoid disappointment you need to book soon.

The cost of R350 includes seminar notes, lunch and other refreshments.

Most of the seminar will be broken up into workshops covering the three phases of retirement.

These segments are:

- How Much is Enough, which covers the period in which you need to build up retirement savings;

- Homeward Bound, which covers the important 10 years before retirement; and

- Assets at Work, which covers the retirement years.

Top speakers will cover vital issues, such as how much you need for retirement and investment strategies.

Other topics include getting the right advice and your legal rights; how the economy impacts on your retirement; the introduction of capital gains tax; and how Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's Budget later this month will affect your retirement savings.
