If you receive a travel allowance, do not forget to record the odometer reading on your vehicle when you get home tomorrow night. The tax year ends on February 28, and you will need the reading to determine your total mileage for the 2009/10 tax year.

Also, do not forget to start a log-book in which you record all your business travel from Monday morning, the start of the new tax year.

The South African Revenue Service will not allow you to use a deemed mileage to claim against your travel allowance in the 2010/11 tax year.
