The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has pointed out that if you must pay tax by the end of March this year, you have to pay it by Thursday, March 28.

The March 31 deadline applies mainly to business owners and trusts.

This year, March ends on a Sunday, which is not a working day, while Friday, March 29, is a public holiday.

SARS says that only payments made on the last working day of the month – that is, Thursday, March 28 – will be reflected as having been paid by the March 31 deadline.

It also warns that if you use the payment authorisation on the eFiling system after 6pm on Thursday, March 28, the “debit pull” payment instruction will not be processed on the same day.
