Pretoria - The Tshwane Metro Police Department has urged the public to take note of marches taking place in the heart of the nation’s capital today.
The first march has been convened by the ANC to raise awareness against the recent killing of people in taverns as well as gender-based violence.
The marchers will gather from 10am at Jubilee Park in Sunnyside and proceed to Jorissen Street, turning left onto Leyds Street to reach SAPS Sunnyside.
The roads that will be affected are Troye, Celliers and Leyds streets.
The participants are expected to disperse from SAPS Sunnyside at 1pm.
Tshwane Metro Police Department spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said their officers would be deployed to monitor the march and all affected streets.
He advised motorists to avoid affected streets and use alternative routes such as Robert Sobukwe, Kotze and Rissik streets.
A similar march will take place in Atteridgeville, expected to be attended by about 1000 participants. They will meet near the intersection of Sekhu and Maunde streets.
Mahamba said another march would be held by the Hammanskraal United Commuters Voice.
“The organisation will be marching against taxi violence in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas,” he said.
The marchers will gather from 9am at the old Putco depot in Marabastad.
From there, they will join Struben Street and proceed straight until they reach the Department of Transport, also in the CBD.
The intersections that will be affected by the march are Cowie, Kgosi Mampuru, Sophie de Bruyn and Bosman streets. They are expected to disperse from the Department of Transport at midday.
As in the first march, Mahamba said Tshwane Metro Police officers would be deployed to monitor the march and all affected streets.
“Motorists are advised to avoid affected streets and use alternative routes such as Boom, Nana Sita, Madiba and WF Nkomo streets,” said Mahamba.
