After waves of criticism directed at him since taking over the reins as head coach at Mamelodi Sundowns, Manqoba Mngqithi has hit back at critics, saying he does not listen to ‘rubbish’ on social media.

Mngqithi has come under heavy criticism in recent weeks from supporters, who have questioned his style of play and his side’s unconvincing performances in the MTN 8, where Masandawana were knocked out of the competition by Stellenbosch FC.

There have also been question marks over the continued omission of experienced players such as Themba Zwane, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau from the starting line-up.

In the Betway Premiership game against SuperSport United on Tuesday, Mokoena and Mudau were not in the match-day squad, while Themba Zwane came off the bench.

Mngqithi, however, has maintained that there was still competition at the Tshwane giants, and everybody had to earn their place in the starting lineup.

Speaking to the media after Sundowns' 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, Mngqithi said he did not listen to the 'rubbish people say about him on social media.

“I am helped by the fact that I’m not on social media.

"So I don't listen to all the rubbish that people would say, so that helps because sometimes you would be emotional from just maybe the pictures people send and put their thing and talk rubbish.

"And you say why is he saying this? But because I am not on social media, I survive and also I am a big boy, I have been in football for more than 20 years now and I know what is expected of me,” Mngqithi said.
