Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” has been a hit at the South African box office as it became the number one opening weekend movie of 2024 so far.

It was released worldwide on July 24, while it only officially opened in most local theatres on July 26.

Since then, scores of fans have flocked to the cinema to witness the iconic team-up between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

This resulted in the superhero flick amassing over R14.8 million during its first weekend in theatres.

Elsewhere on the continent, the film also secured the biggest opening weekend of 2024 at the West African Box Office, with N165,7 million (Nigerian naira).

In East Africa, with an opening tally of Kes 8.2m (Kenyan shilling), it also became the biggest opening weekend of 2024 as well as the biggest post-pandemic opening to date in the region.

Meanwhile, the film also shattered records around the world, opening to an estimated $444.1m (about R8.2 billion) globally, including $211m (about R3.9bn) in America alone.

Directed by Shawn Levy, who also co-wrote the movie with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Zeb Wells, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” also stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Matthew Macfadyen.

The film’s success follows Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”, which, following its June 16 release, became the biggest film of 2024 at the South African Box Office to date. Globally, it became the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

There are also many more exciting upcoming releases from The Walt Disney Company for the remainder of the year.

This includes "Alien: Romulus," "Moana 2" and "Mufasa: The Lion King,“ which stars South African talents, Thuso Mbedu, John Kani and Kagiso Lediga.
