Durban - While work has limited Bongekile “Babes Wodumo” Simelane’s time with her infant son, the music artist and choreographer is looking forward to her first Mother’s Day.
The gqom artist who shot to fame with her hit track “Wololo” said the build-up to this Mother’s Day had an extra special feeling to it, being her first as a mother.
“It feels much more special this time, although I have been like a mother to my niece and nephew. It excites me every time he calls me ‘mama’. I still can’t believe I’m a mom. It’s a great feeling.
“I’ve been sending ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ messages to my mom and sister for years. Now I’m finally going to receive those messages as well. Ain’t life amazing?” she asked.
When asked what inspired her 10-month-old son’s name, she said, “Spontshi” was named by her fans after a video that circulated just before she gave birth.
“We named him Nhlanhla but his nickname is Spontshi. He was named by our fans after the video done by my mother-in-law, so the name stuck.”
She said every parent loves to spoil their little ones, especially the first-time moms.
“Sometimes I go into a clothing shop to buy stuff for me but then I get drawn to clothing in the baby section. I’ve noticed my husband (Mampintsha) has the same problem,” she said.
Although her schedule is always busy, she said she tries to make time to bond with her son.
“We play, laugh and even sing to him. I think I’ve got to understand him.”
