Broos explained Tau’s absence during his announcement of Bafana’s 23-member squad in Joburg.
“The fact that he’s not here with us is because there are personal reasons. Broos said Tau told him in a telephone conversation: ‘Coach please don’t call me, I’m not ready to come because of personal issues.’
“So maybe he needs to look for another team where he’ll play and be happy. Perhaps a team where there are fewer problems so that we can have the old well-known Percy Tau from a few years ago.
“The qualities of Percy are something that can help us a lot but we have to be honest. When comparing his performances for the national team have never been the same as qualities he has as a player (for his club). He can do more for the national team but there is always something (bothering him).”
Broos said he could not elaborate on the reasons for Tau’s decision. However, Broos’ comment about Tau needing to look at another club suggests that Tau may not be comfortable at the Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
Last month, Broos decided against calling up Tau for the matches against Uganda and South Sudan. Broos said he was trying to shield Tau from the wrath of fans who were not happy with his contribution to the national team. Broos said Tau did not mind taking flak from fans.
“Therefore, I didn’t call him last time and he told me it’s part of the game. Yes, it’s part of the game, but it’s in your mind. You can’t tell me it’s not in your mind,” Broos explained.
Broos said he was happy that Oswin Appollis remained at Polokwane City and did not secure a move to North Africa.
He explained that while Appollis missed out on a big money move it was best because he still needed to develop in the domestic arena.
“I’m disappointed that he didn’t move but I’m happy because if it was true he is going to Algiers,” said Broos.
“I said to him in September when we were in camp, I know there’s money but it’s not the right team for you. So, for that, I am happy that he is still in Polokwane City. He will always play there which is a good thing and again you see what happens with that guy (Khanyisa) Mayo - he is not playing.”
Bafana’s 23-member squad, apart from the Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC players, assembled in Johannesburg yesterday. This morning, the full squad will fly to Gqeberha ahead of Friday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo Brazzaville.
Next Saturday, Bafana will travel to Congo to play the return match on Tuesday, October 15.
Broos said he was concerned by the number of goals his charges conceded during matches against Uganda and South Sudan.
“Those things have got to change, that has to change,” said Broos.
“You can’t concede two or three goals in almost every game and have to score three or four goals to win a game. We have to restore that.”
Bafana has four log points after their opening two matches in the qualifiers. Victory in both upcoming clashes against Congo would put them in a strong position to secure qualification for next year’s tournament.
