Presented by MagentaPro in collaboration with Arts Alive, Camdeboo, the highly anticipated debut play by Ayanda Nxumalo, arrives at The Market Theatre this November.
Following its overwhelming success at the National Arts Festival, this powerful production sheds light on the untold story of Sara Baartman, inviting audiences to witness her journey from her homeland in the Eastern Cape to her forced exhibition abroad.
Nxumalo’s modern storytelling approach not only illuminates Baartman’s struggles and experiences but also serves as a powerful educational tool for today’s younger generation.
By drawing parallels between the objectification of women in the 19th century and the present day, the play forces audiences to confront and reflect on the ongoing challenges women face.
“A lot of women feel uncomfortable when they are praised in ways that reduce them to mere physical attributes or objectify them,” says Nxumalo.
“Sara’s story is a reminder that every woman deserves to be respected for who she is beyond her physical appearance. It’s time to move beyond outdated perceptions and embrace women for their multifaceted identities.”
