Eldorado Park businessman and taxi owner William Jones has been killed.

Police said Jones, 64, who was affectionately known as Pappie Jones, was shot eight times in the upper body and the head in front of the gate of his house in Bushkoppies, near Eldorado Park, on Wednesday night.

It is believed that his assailants could have been waiting for him outside.

Speaking on behalf of the Johannesburg Southern Suburbs Transport Services (JSSTA), to which Jones was affiliated, and his family, Jones’s nephew and JSSTA chairman Ralph Jones said: “He was shot and nothing was taken from him. We can’t say at this stage whether his murder was taxi related or not because it could have been anything, even road rage.

“According to us, as family and colleagues in the taxi industry, Pappie Jones didn’t have any known enemies.”

Talking to The Star yesterday, Jones’s two daughters, who asked not to be named, said their father’s attackers pounced on him as he turned into the driveway just after 10pm.

“He was still inside the car when they started shooting. My mother and other people in the neighbourhood heard the shots.”
