A BOLT of lightning. Thunder. Then a man fell to the ground. That’s how Louis Motaung, of Orlando West Extension, met his death on Friday afternoon.

Motaung, 64, had gone to a bereaved relative’s house in the neighbourhood when he was struck by lightning.

Shocked neighbours say the incident happened shortly after a hearse with the body of Dikone Matheko had arrived at the house for a night vigil. Matheko, who died after a short illness, was buried on Saturday.

“Just when we were removing the coffin from the hearse, I saw something like a bolt of fire coming towards us from above. I tried to run and then I heard the sound of thunder before seeing a man fall on the ground. It happened so fast I am still in shock,” said a neighbour.

He said Motaung was standing a few metres away from the hearse, near a telephone pole, when he was struck.

“Bra Louis was going to give the vote of thanks at the cemetery on Saturday. He and Matheko were very close and it is sad that they should die one after the other within such a short space of time.
