Tabraiz Shamsi, Donovan Ferreira and Imran Tahir spun Joburg Super Kings to a 28-run SA20 victory over the Durban’s Super Giants at Kingsmead in Durban on Tuesday evening.

The trio had all the time in the world to closely watch Durban spinners Keshav Maharaj, Prenelan Subrayen and Noor Ahmad operate against the Joburg batting line-up in the first innings.

The visiting trio were then able to formulate a plan, having watched Maharaj (2/28), Subrayen (2/24) and Ahmad (0/29) take four of the seven Super Kings wickets as the visitors set the hosts a 170-run target to win the match.

It was that advantage that eventually gave the Super Kings the upper hand as Shamsi, Ferreira and Tahir rocked up with better plans and execution to help the visitors successfully defend 169 away from home in their second fixture of the tournament.

Tahir (1/29) was the first to inflict some damage, doing so with a vintage wrong ’un against West Indies International Brandon King (17), who was left frustrated by the sound and sight of the rattled stumps behind him.

Ferreira (2/15) followed suit, striking twice in the same over, removing Wiaan Mulder (9) and Jason Smith (0) just outside the first powerplay as the visitors made inroads in the strong Super Giants batting line-up.

A 48-run stand between arguably the world’s best player of spin, Heinrich Klaasen, and Quinton de Kock followed as the pair nullified the threat of spin.

Just as the stand was building, Matheesha Pathirana (1/34) accounted for Klaasen (29), leaving the hosts 71 runs short of the target with eight overs remaining.

Shamsi (2/18) followed the same trajectory, bowling Chris Woakes (4) with a googly before trapping Maharaj (0) in front of the stumps with a conventional leg-spinner to sway the momentum in the Super Kings’ favour.

With the spinners having handled the middle overs brilliantly, fast bowler Gerald Coetzee (2/32) wrapped up the match with the wickets of De Kock (55) and Naveen-ul-Haq (1) to hand the Super Giants their first loss at home this season.

With the bat, Leus du Plooy (38), Ferreira (26) and Jonny Bairstow (26) were key to the Super Kings posting 169/7 as the visitors eventually won the match by 28 runs. | Independent Media Sport
