A 65-year-old woman was assaulted during a robbery at her home in Brindhaven, Verulam, on Sunday afternoon.

Prem Balram, the head of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), said when reaction officers arrived at the property, it was established that the woman resided in an outbuilding.

"She entered the outbuilding after conducting chores in the yard and two men followed her. One of the men threw her on the sofa and asked her to remain silent.

"He then forced a gold bangle out of her hand, while his accomplice retrieved a knife from the kitchen. They gestured with their hands for the female to show them the location of the cash and valuables. The woman pointed to a locked door."

Balram said the suspects asked the woman to open the door not realising that it led to the main building.

"Once opened, the woman called for assistance and attempted to flee. One of the robbers assaulted her. Her relative from the main building investigating the commotion discovered one of the suspects in the house."

He said a tussle between both men ensued but the robber broke free and fled with his accomplice.

"The victim sustained minor injuries."
