THE funeral of a 13-year-old boy, Mikai Chetty, who was stabbed in his home, is being held at the Faith Revival Church in Phoenix this afternoon.
Mikai, a Grade 7 pupil at Glenashley Preparatory School, and his grandmother, Nadhira Essack, also known as Vanmala Chetty, were repeatedly stabbed in their Effingham home on Wednesday morning.
Essack also succumbed to her injuries. Her funeral was yesterday.
Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics Medical Services, said three people, believed to be family, had sustained multiple stab wounds.
“An elderly female, believed to be in her seventies, and a teen boy sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for them. They were declared deceased on the scene.”
Jamieson said another woman, who also sustained serious injuries, was stabilised.
“She was transported to a nearby hospital under police guard for further care."
In a statement on Facebook, Mikai’s school said they had been deeply saddened by the “tragic news” of his passing.
“This loss has profoundly affected all of us, and our hearts go out to Mikai’s family and friends during this time of immense grief. Mikai was a cherished member of our school family, known for his kindness, calm energy and unique spirit. His presence brought warmth to our classrooms, and his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by everyone who knew him…”
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a provincial police spokesperson, said Greenwood Park police were investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.
