A Pietermaritzburg mother, returning home after a relatives funeral in Durban, was killed when a car battery was thrown off a bridge, on the N3 near the Pavilion Shopping Centre on Sunday evening.
Madhumathie Bunwarie, 62, of Mountain Rise, had attended the funeral of her uncle in Phoenix.
She was travelling back home with her husband, niece and brother-in-law when tragedy struck.
Her uncle, Roy Sukdhev, said: “We had all gathered at the Verulam Crematorium for my brother’s final rites. Throughout the day, Madhu had been a great source of support to me. Before leaving, she hugged me and said she would call me when she got home. Not even an hour later, my son received a call from her son-in-law that there was an accident and they had rushed her to hospital.
“When my son arrived at the hospital, Madhu had already passed away. Her husband, and other family members were not injured, but very traumatised. My son was told that a battery - which must have been thrown off the bridge – crashed through the windscreen – hitting Madhu on the head,” he said.
Sukdhev added that there was need for more security and surveillance of bridges to curb such incidents.
